Cheers!
I'm a homebrewing montrealer, beer aficionado and gruit advocate. I started gruitale.com as an ongoing journey in reviving the lost brewing tradition of gruit ale. I have been inspired by many readings but foremost by Stephen Harrod Buhner's Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers. I value his writings as they always raise interesting questions about beer history, it's flavoring and the very curious predominance of only one herb in beer today, Hops.
Ian Hornsey states that "more than 175 plants, or plant-derived products to have been implicated in flavoring, preserving, and even adulterating beer over the millenia". This has always puzzled and inspired me, as a homebrewer and beer lover, to learn about the historical, commercial and even ideological reasons which have limited beer to today's dominant hopped version.
I welcome any feedback, questions or suggestions, and I love to talk about beer so don't hesitate.
Welcome to the Gruit Ale Revival.
